Stonegrove’s heart celebrated through community, creativity and funLocal residents and members of St Peter’s church in Stonegrove, Edgware, recently shared the enjoyment of a fun-filled afternoon of creative community art. The aim of the project was to decorate hoardings surrounding the church as part of the demolition of the final buildings on the Stonegrove estate as the area is regenerated. The project gave residents the opportunity to celebrate the heart of their community. The contributions to the art work included handprints on pictures of trees, names signed on a ‘name bush’ and painting self-portraits on the hoardings.
Independent film maker, Fran Robertson, who is making a documentary about regeneration of local estates, said:
“[I was] thrilled to be able to attend the fun day at St Peter’s Community Church. It was lovely to see so many members of the local community brought together at one event.”
The project was designed and piloted by staff and junior leaders from the Stonegrove Estates’ Youth Project as part of their summer activities. St Peter’s church supports this youth project with finance, management and volunteers. It is the only project in Barnet to deliver generic youth work on more than three evenings each week.
Members of the congregation at St Peter’s also provided face painting and refreshments at the event, which included dancing from the church youth group and bingo with the Stonegrove and Spur Road Community Group. The event was also supported by Stonegrove Community Trust, whose representatives include members of St Peter’s as local resident trustees. The Trust will manage the innovative joint community and church centre which will be the new home for community and church in 2016.
Local PCSO Dianne Trinder said:
“It was a wonderful afternoon with a great atmosphere. It felt like local residents and church members were taking the first steps together into a new future the even before the new joint community and church centre building is finished.”
June/july 2015 The hoardings have started to go up around st. peter's
The hoardings are now surrounding the church as the builders prepare to demolish Haviland Court and Wilberforce (the last high rise left) the light coloured hoardings will be painted white so that they can have murals etc. be painted on by the Stonegrove Estate Youth Project and the Young People of St. Peters in a Community Art project over the summer.
Pentecost 24/05/2015 (The biggest birthday party ever)
St. Peter's celebrated Pentecost with the Biggest Birthday Party Ever. It was a day of celebration for us all we celebrated the birth of the church, the giving of the 10 commandments, and the coming of the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The Service started with the infamous "Ring-a-ding' song, our young people danced for us, some made birthday cards for thechurch and we had some powerful testimonies. A really great day! God is good - All the time.
